Laser Spectroscopy Research Laboratory Scientist

What You'll Do

• Conduct hands-on laser spectroscopy experiments involving gas-phase molecules and reactive chemical species
• Operate lasers, optical systems, high-vacuum equipment, scientific instrumentation, detectors, electronics, and computers
• Assist with experimental setup, optical alignment, optimization, calibration, and troubleshooting
• Collect, analyze, organize, and interpret spectroscopic and experimental data
• Help identify and characterize new or previously unobserved molecular species
• Maintain and improve laboratory instruments and experimental apparatus
• Assist in designing new laboratory components, instruments, and experimental configurations
• Work collaboratively with scientists, engineers, machinists, technicians, and other technical personnel
• Document experimental procedures, observations, results, and technical findings
• Contribute to research intended for scientific presentation and publication
• Maintain a safe, organized, and productive laboratory environment

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Physics, or a closely related scientific field
• Strong interest in experimental laboratory research and scientific instrumentation
• Comfortable performing hands-on work with scientific, optical, mechanical, electronic, and computer-based systems
• Strong analytical and scientific problem-solving skills
• Ability to carefully follow experimental procedures while also thinking independently when troubleshooting problems
• Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately document experimental work and results
• Ability to learn new scientific instruments, technologies, software, and experimental methods
• Ability to work full-time and on-site in Albuquerque, New Mexico
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States

Preferred Experience

• Previous laboratory research experience
• Experience with laser spectroscopy, molecular spectroscopy, or optical spectroscopy
• Experience operating or aligning lasers and optical equipment
• Experience working with high-vacuum systems or vacuum instrumentation
• Experience with scientific electronics, detectors, data acquisition, or computer-controlled instrumentation
• Experience analyzing scientific data or using scientific computing software
• Experience designing, modifying, or troubleshooting experimental apparatus

Prior laser spectroscopy experience is preferred, but candidates with strong experimental aptitude and the appropriate scientific education are encouraged to apply. Training will be provided.
